Bobby Jones Golf Quotes

May 21st, 2011 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

"Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course… the space between your ears."

"If ever I needed an eight foot putt, and everything I owned depended on it, I would want Arnold Palmer to putt for me."

"It is nothing new or original to say that golf is played one stroke at a time. But it took me many years to realize it."

"A leading difficulty with the average player is that he totally misunderstands what is meant by concentration. He may think he is concentrating hard when he is merely worrying. "

"The secret of golf is to turn three shots into two."

“Golf is assuredly a mystifying game. It would seem that if a person has hit a golf ball correctly a thousand times, he should be able to duplicate the performance at will. But this is certainly not the case.”

“Sometimes the game of golf is just too difficult to endure with a golf club in your hands.”

“I will tell you privately it's not going to get better, it's going to get worse all the time, but don't fret. Remember, we "play the ball where it lies," and now let's not talk about this, ever again.”

“I particularly regretted winning at the nineteenth hole by the aid of a stymie which was almost impossible to negotiate.”

No-one will ever have golf under his thumb. No round ever will be so good it could not have been better. Perhaps this is why golf is the greatest of games. You are not playing a human adversary; you are playing a game. You are playing old man par.

"You swing your best when you have the fewest things to think about. "

"Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies."

"It is nevertheless a game of considerable passion, either of the explosive type, or that which burns inwardly and sears the soul."

"I never learned anything from a match that I won."

"Many shots are spoiled at the last instant by efforts to add a few more yards."

"The best exercise for golfers is golfing."

"The moment the average golfer attempts to play from long grass or a bunker or from a difficult lie of any kind, he becomes a digger instead of a swinger."

"Golf is said to be a humbling game, but it is surprising how many people are either not aware of their weaknesses or else reckless of consequences."

"Rhythm and timing are the two things which we all must have, yet no one knows how to teach either."

"One reason golf is such an exasperating game is that a thing we learned is so easily forgotten, and we find ourselves struggling year after year with faults we had discovered and corrected time and again."

"You might as well praise a man for not robbing a bank as to praise him for playing by the rules."

Jack Nicklaus Golf Quotes

May 19th, 2011 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

“Confidence is the most important single factor in this game, and no matter how great your natural talent, there is only one way to obtain and sustain it: work.”

“Resolve never to quit, never to give up, no matter what the situation.”

“I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.”

“I like trying to win. That’s what golf is all about.”

“A kid grows up a lot faster on the golf course. Golf teaches you how to behave.”

“Focus on remedies, not faults.”

“Through the years of experience I have found that air offers less resistance than dirt.”
On teeing up versus tee shot off ground.

“Golf is a better game played downhill.”

“My ability to concentrate and work toward that goal has been my greatest asset.”

“How people keep correcting us when we are young! There is always some bad habit or other they tell us we ought to get over. Yet most bad habits are tools to help us through life.”

“Concentration is a fine antidote to anxiety.”

“There isn’t a flaw in his golf or his makeup. He will win more majors than Arnold Palmer and me combined. Somebody is going to dust my records. It might as well be Tiger, because he’s such a great kid.”

“He had a lot of talent, but didn’t have much dedication, wasn’t organized, didn’t know how to learn, didn’t know how to comprehend what he was doing, didn’t try to learn how to get better.”

“When the British Open is in Scotland, there’s something special about it. And when it’s at St. Andrews, it’s even greater.”

“There are no maladies in my golf game. My golf game stinks.”

“The game is meant to be fun.”

“This is a game. That’s all it is. It’s not a war.”

“Professional golf is the only sport where, if you win 20% of the time, you’re the best.”

“Success depends almost entirely on how effectively you learn to manage the game’s two ultimate adversaries: the course and yourself.”

“I wish I had kept my damn mouth shut.”

“Ask yourself how many shots you would have saved if you never lost your temper, never got down on yourself, always developed a strategy before you hit, and always played within your own capabilities.”

“I guess that’s why they call it Hell.”

“When I want a long ball, I spin my hips faster.”

“It’s hard not to play golf that’s up to”

“He has the finest, fundamentally sound golf swing I’ve ever seen.”

“He’s going to be around a long, long time, if his body holds up. That’s always a concern with a lot of players because of how much they play. A lot of guys can’t handle it. But it looks like he can.”

“Essentially, he has been retired since he was 21.”

“For the first time I felt like they used to feel when they played with me – Mark hits it so hard and far, I felt totally inadequate.”

“A perfectly straight shot with a big club is a fluke.”

“The longer you play, the better chance the better player has of winning.”

“When asked ‘You really know your way around the course. What’s your secret?’ The holes are numbered.”

“Sometimes the biggest problem is in your head. You’ve got to believe you can play a shot instead of wondering where your next bad shot is coming from.”

“Don’t be too proud to take lessons. I’m not.”

“Over the first three rounds you’re playing the course. In the final round, if you’re in contention, you’re playing the man.”

“Confidence is the most important single factor in this game, and no matter how great your natural talent, there is only one way to obtain and sustain it: work.”

“I’m a firm believer that in the theory that people only do their best at things they truly enjoy. It is difficult to excel at something you don’t enjoy.”

“It’s hard not to play golf that’s up to Jack Nicklaus standards when you are Jack Nicklaus.”

Arnold Palmer has something to say about Golf

May 19th, 2011 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

Arnold Palmer offers some words of wisdom about golf:

“The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.”

“I’ve always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn’t have a chance to win.”

“Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you.”

“Concentration, Confidence, Competitive urge, Capacity for enjoyment.”

“Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character.”

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

“It’s a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get”

“Here is a philosophy of boldness to take advantage of every tiny opening toward victory.”

“Putting is like wisdom – partly a natural gift and partly the accumulation of experience.”

“I have a tip that can take 5 strokes off anyone’s golf game. It’s called an eraser.”

“You must play boldly to win.”

“What do I mean by concentration? I mean focusing totally on the business at hand and commanding your body to do exactly what you want it to do.”

“What other people may find in poetry, I find in the flight of a good drive.”

“On the Old Course at St. Andrews: This is the origin of the game, golf in its purest form, and it’s still played that way on a course seemingly untouched by time. Every time I play here, it reminds me that this is still a game.”

“It is not a dreamlike state, but the somehow insulated state, that a great musician achieves in a great performance. He’s aware of where he is and what he’s doing, but his mind is on the playing of the instrument with an internal sense of rightness / it is not merely mechanical, it is not only spiritual; it is something of both, on a different plane and a more remote one.”

“What other people may find in poetry or art museums, I find in the flight of a good drive.”

“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting it is.”

“I never rooted against an opponent, but I never rooted for him either.”

“[Palmer's caddie had suggested that morning,] Today’s your birthday — you ought to shoot your age, … That’s a hell of an idea.”

“I guess that is one of the most humbling things that has happened to me, the fact the golfers of the world and just the fans have been so supportive, so responsive to what I do and what I am and where I’m going,”

“I’m going to sit there through the winter and the weather and everything, … I won’t need to head south at all.”

“Well I had about four hours sleep last night, a lot less than I usually have, I had my dress shoes on, I couldn’t bend over, my arms were sore, my head was sore, … Hell, I thought I did pretty good.”

“The pressures here that year were probably as much as anything I had done in my life up to that point,”

“I felt pretty good about it, and of course it was the kicking off point for the rest of my career.”

“I watch (Weir) a lot, it’s not too far from normal after having a couple of good years, and really playing very well,”

“When you see someone who is pretty solid in the basic fundamentals of the game, and I haven’t seen Mike make any dramatic changes, that’s good.”

“I don’t know why they would be nervous around me, … They way they hit the ball, I got intimidated. They hit it so far it was unreal. It was fun. They’re good young players. They knocked the dirt out of that thing.”

“It probably wouldn’t hurt if the amateurs won once in a while for their confidence and to keep the matches exciting.”

“As far as trying to compete in a major championship such as the Open and other tournaments, this is it, … I’m through doing that. I will not be doing it anymore.”

“I think it’s going to be exciting for me and it’s going to be somewhat sentimental,”

“It was a fantastic day. Part of the reason I’m still playing and doing what I’m doing is because of the fans. I feel like I owe them a little bit back for all the years they supported me. I’m not happy with my golf game right now, but maybe I’ll be able to hit a little better one of these days.”

“This course is ready for whatever they want to put on it. I didn’t see any flaws on the course.”

“I wanted to protect myself, though, and that’s the reason I played both balls, so there could be no question one way or the other.”

“He was a guy that enjoyed everything he did, … And I spent a great deal of time with him over the years, played a lot of golf with him, and I think that his life meant laughter and making fun.”

“He didn’t have the speed of Tiger Woods coming through the ball, but he made good contact, and he hit the ball very well up until he couldn’t play anymore.”

“The golf was lousy, … I couldn’t ask for anything but maybe a little better score.”

“I’m getting to the point where I’m going to just sort of fade away,”

The Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass

May 15th, 2011 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

David Toms holes out birdie on 18 from a drive that landed in a sand filled divot. K.J. Choi makes his par putt that slides in the left edge to force a playoff back to hole 17. It was that hole that Choi birdied and Toms pared with a putt from edge of rough. Back at 16, Toms went for the green and found the water which led to a bogey. He had a one stroke lead going into 16. Choi had a masterful third chip to within five and half feet but missed the birdie putt.

On the playoff 17th hole, K.J. Choi hits the middle back of the green and sticks. David Toms hits a better shot pin high middle right. Choi paces the ball just past the hole which will allow him a par. David Toms stroke a firm putt that runs past the hole and past Choi’s mark. Toms lips out the strong par putt for a bogey. It was David Tom’s first miss from within five feet for the entire week.

K.J. Choi nails his par putt to become The Players Champion 2011 at TPC Sawgrass! Hats off to K.J. Choi

Golf Rangefinders on Amazon

Range Finders for golf on Amazon. Golf Rangefinders on Amazon

Introducing the world's first Laser Rangefinder and GPS in one. Combining laser accuracy with GPS convenience, it's just the game-changer you need. It features the PinSeeker Technology used by more than 90% of PGA professionals, with +/-1-yard accuracy, 5x magnification and distance to front, center and back of green. Plus, the GPS function offers 16,000+ pre-loaded North American courses, Auto Hole Advance, Auto Course Recognition and no one-time or re-occurring membership fees.

The Nikon Monarch Gold Laser 1200 Rangefinder is fully waterproof and fogproof, nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed. Nikon's Tru-Target ranging system allows for precise ranging in all situations as far out as 1,200 yards. With an unmatched 1/2-yard accuracy, Nikon's original digital process makes faster, more accurate readings, and accuracy that is not effected by temperature. It also features long eye-relief for comfortable ranging.

The Callaway iQ Laser Rangefinder comes equipped with revolutionary Active Brightness Control Viewfinder which enhances readability in low light conditions. Golfers will experience improved light transmittance and new technology that detects the brightness of the field of view and automatically adjusts the image from a grey LCD to a field of view that is lighted by an orange LED. iQ calculates distance to the target based on incline or decline data as well as the actual distance to the target, taking the guesswork out of your club choice and speeding up play. Both distances are locked into the reticle by acquiring your distance and releasing the power button. iQ has a measurement range of 11-1000yds.

The Callaway idTECH Rangefinder provides range information during a round that allows a golfer to club correctly regardless of up/down slope of any shot. The newest addition to the Tour Authentic Series is used by pro staff and caddies to make yardage books when mapping a course. idTECH has a measurement range of 11-550 yards and contains incline/decline technology. After acquiring the range of your chosen target, idTECH will display the actual yardage and the additional or subtracted yardage amount to correctly club the shot.

Level the ups and downs in your quest for perfection. Built in the legacy of our venerable PinSeeker 1500, the Pro 1600 is the world's only golf laser rangefinder to compensate for the changes in elevation. Using a digital inclinometer, it determines distance based on the degree of elevation change. It doesn't just tell you how far-it tells you exactly how far to play it. So you'll never again question the range at the top of your swing. And nothing cuts strokes, and eliminates the peaks and valleys of your game, like confidence. It's completely waterproof for wet days on the course and includes a premium carrying case.

Combining a surveyor, coach, mathematician, and caddy in a single device, the GX-2 will help you take your golf game to the next level. At its most basic level, the GX-2 is a straightforward laser rangefinder, with the ability to identify distances to flags, sand traps, and other objects on the course. Switch to True Golf Range (TGR) mode, however, and the GX-2 instantly becomes a coach, providing accurate ranging information that matches your personal striking distances to the slope of the shot and current atmospheric conditions. The GX-2 even suggests which clubs to use, helping you step onto the course with confidence. It's like having your own caddy on the fairway, but without the small talk.

The world's smallest, most advanced laser rangefinder, the Bushnell Tour V2 weighs just 6.6 ounces and is accurate from 5 to 1000 yards. It's equipped with PinSeeker technology to combine pinpoint accuracy and consistency enabling you to range up to 300 yards (±1 yard) to the flag without the use of reflectors.

There's nothing quite as frustrating as hitting your club perfectly only to see the ball fall 30 yards short of the green. Enter the Callaway LR550 laser rangefinder, which quickly and accurately measures the yardstick from up to 550 yards away. The LR550, which comes in a striking yellow case, offers multiple range-finding modes for your convenience. The first target mode, for example, displays the range to the nearest target–useful when measuring the distance to a pin on the green with woods in the background. The rangefinder also boasts a continuous mode that ranges multiple targets in succession for up to eight seconds, so you can determine whether you have the right club to clear the sand trap or water hazard. Plus, targeting an object couldn't be easier thanks to the built-in reticle and LCD display, which combine to tell you when ranging is in progress.

With precision optics, proprietary technology that ranges the pin easily (even at extended distances), and a Scan mode available at any time, the Leupold GX-1 digital golf rangefinder sets the pace for line-of-sight measurement. The GX-1 is built around its PinHunter and Prism Lock functions. Every GX-1 golf rangefinder has been precisely calibrated to fire a laser beam at the target in the crosshairs, whether it's a flag, tree, or sand trap.

ProStaff 550 Laser RangefinderGreen – 11-550 yards – 6x magnification – Multicoated optics – Tru-Target Ranging System – Uncluttered LCD display – Ultra-compact

Pinpoint Technology Means that when you want to hit the flag, you will! Point and shoot can't be any easier. We believe we've mastered the KIS concept.

Pebble Beach Golf Links The Official History

February 5th, 2011 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

A celebration of one of the most beautiful places on earth, Pebble Beach Golf Links chronicles over 80 years of spectacular golf at the greatest meeting of land and water.

Pebble Beach Golf Links: The Official History

When one thinks of Pebble Beach, two images immediately pop into view: the daunting dogleg 18th with the Pacific Ocean roaring on the left, and a gaggleful of celebrity hackers tearing up the place in the annual Pro-Am that first teed off as the Crosby Clambake. Both are important pieces of the Pebble Beach story, but they're just that–pieces. In celebrating the site of the 2000 U.S. Open, The Official History uncovers much more. The result is part chronicle and part large-format photo album that beautifully traces the saga of this spectacular venue from its pre-golf beginnings to its evolution into the mecca that Jack Nicklaus insists is the one course he'd opt to play if he could play only one course for the rest of his life. –Jeff Silverman
