Shin Withdraws, Surgery Expected

June 17th, 2010 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

The world’s top-ranked female golfer, Jiyai Shin, has withdrawn from this week’s LPGA State Farm Classic with a bout of appendicitis, the Golf Channel reported.

Christina Kim tweeted:

“Everyone please pray for Ji Yai Shin’s health. She is in the ER with appendicitis. Hurry back, please!!!”

The timing is terrible for Shin and for LPGA fans – this is the one part of the season the tour has a regular, weekly slate of events. The LPGA Championship is in two weeks, and tournaments are scheduled each of the next four weeks. It’s likely that Ai Miyazato with take over the No. 1 ranking during Shin’s absence.

Update: Golf Channel reports the surgery went well and Shin hopes to return in time for the LPGA Championship.

Fun with Google Translate

Minea Blomqvist returns to action on the LPGA Tour this week at the State Farm Classic. It’s her first appearance on the LPGA since November 2009 at the LPGA Tour Classic. The Finnish golfer had more important things to do, such as give birth to her first child.

I was reading – or trying to read, rather – some Finnish newspaper articles about Blomqvist today with the help of Google Translate. And one of those articles yielded a pretty amazing translation:

Minea Blomqvist Huippugolffari recent weeks have been tough. Since late March, was born first-born son Elmer Fudd has brought much joy to 25-year-old virtuoso bat life, but back in top shape has been torrential.

Huippugolffari … virtuoso bat life … has been torrential … Elmer Fudd …

ELMER FUDD? She named her kid Elmer Fudd?? Minea might have a future in Celebrityville, where children wind up with unfortunate names such as Pilot Inspektor and Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily.

But it turns out “Elmer Fudd” is apparently just an artifact of the current state of translation technology, and not the name of Blomqvist’s baby.

But there’s a story – and a cartoon connection – to the actual name of Blomqvist’s baby boy. The Ladies European Tour explained that the baby was born on March 31, which in the European style is rendered 31 March 2010. The LET noted:

According to her press manager, Minni asked straight after the delivery, “Do you notice the date of the birth?”

She said: “Well, it’s the number plate of Donald Duck’s car: 313 (31st March). Roope and I decided immediately to add one more name between the two already chosen first names. Donald’s Finnish name Aku complemented the baby’s name to be Elmeri Aku Mikael Kakko,” explained an excited Minea.

So her son is not named Elmer Fudd, but does carry a middle name based on Donald Duck. Perhaps the question to ask now is, just how much time did Minea Blomqvist spend watching cartoons as a child? Answer: Enough to know what Donald Duck’s license plate number is.

The father, by the way, is Roope Kakko, a Finnish golf professional who currently plays on the European Challenge Tour and is No. 395 in the World Golf Rankings.

Congratulations to Minea and Roope, and welcome back to the LPGA, Minni.
