Woods Commits to Players Championship

April 30th, 2010 by Phil Reich PGA Golf Art

Tiger Woods‘ next appearance on the PGA Tour is at the Quail Hollow Championship next week. And now we know where he’ll play after that: The Players Championship the following week.

The deadline to enter The Players Championship is April 30, but Woods announced his entry today. In the past, he has typically not confirmed entry in tournaments until the last minute. But he announced early for Quail Hollow (April 29-May 2) and now has done the same for The Players Championship (May 6-9).

Why? Is he giving tournaments more time to promote his appearance? To use him in tourney advertising and PR? Is he giving them more time to work out security and crowd control details? Is he letting fans know far enough in advance to make plans? No way to know, but it doesn’t really matter. It works out well for everyone.

Playing The Masters, moving on to Quail Hollow and then The Players Championship fits in with the schedule Woods typically plays when he’s healthy. If that trend continues, then the remainder of his PGA Tour schedule for 2010 is pretty easy to guess. It will look like this:

April 29-May 2: Quail Hollow Championship
May 6-9: The Players Championship
June 3-6: The Memorial
June 17-20: U.S. Open
July 1-4: AT&T National
July 15-18: British Open
Aug. 5-8: WGC Bridgestone Invitational
Aug. 12-15: PGA Championship

After that, the FedEx Cup “playoffs” begin with The Barclays (Aug. 26-29) and conclude with the Tour Championship (Sept. 23-26).

Update: Woods also publicly affirmed today that he will play the AT&T National in July. That is the tournament for which he was served as host the past three years. Prior to Woods’ return to golf, the PGA Tour announced he will not have hosting duties at this year’s tournament. However, the AT&T National still benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation.
